The essentials

HDFC Bank FD returns: monthly interest, senior citizen rates and comparison

Monthly interest on an HDFC Bank FD

With a monthly payout HDFC Bank FD at the 1-year rate of 6.25%, interest is about ₹521 a month on ₹1 lakh, ₹2,604 on ₹5 lakh and ₹5,208 on ₹10 lakh, before tax. Banks usually pay monthly interest at a slightly discounted rate, so treat these as close estimates. Switch the calculator to Monthly income mode to see the post-tax figure. Payout deposits earn less in total than cumulative ones, because the interest is paid out instead of compounding.

HDFC Bank FD for senior citizens

0.50% above the general rate (0.60% on 3 years 1 day to under 4 years 7 months); resident individuals aged 60 and above. Tick "Senior citizen" in the calculator and it loads the senior rate for the tenure you pick. For example, ₹10 lakh for 5 years at 6.90% grows to about ₹14.08 lakh. Senior citizens under the old tax regime can also claim the 80TTB deduction on up to ₹50,000 of interest a year, and can submit Form 15H to avoid TDS if their total income is below the taxable limit.

Still have questions? Contact us
How do I calculate interest on an HDFC Bank FD?
For a cumulative deposit, maturity = P × (1 + r/4)^(4 × t), because interest compounds quarterly. Interest is the maturity amount minus the deposit. This HDFC Bank FD calculator applies the formula with HDFC Bank's rate for your tenure.
What are the current HDFC Bank FD interest rates?
On HDFC Bank's rate card effective 19 August 2026, the general rate is 6.25% for 1 year, 6.45% for 3 years and 6.40% for 5 years. The full chart, including senior citizen rates, is on this page. Confirm the current rate before you invest.
What is the penalty for breaking an HDFC Bank FD early?
HDFC Bank's rule: 1.00% below the rate that applied, on the booking date, to the period the deposit actually stayed with the bank (deposits from 22 July 2023). For example, ₹5 lakh booked for 3 years at 6.45% and closed after 18 months earns about ₹42,293 at 5.45%, which is ₹8,075 less than without the penalty. Before breaking a deposit, compare the cost with a loan against the FD using the calculator's Loan against FD mode.
How much monthly interest will I get on ₹1 lakh in HDFC Bank?
On a monthly payout FD at 6.25%, about ₹521 a month on ₹1 lakh before tax; about ₹2,604 on ₹5 lakh and ₹5,208 on ₹10 lakh.
In how many years will an HDFC Bank FD double?
At the 5-year rate of 6.40% compounded quarterly, about 10.9 years. The rule of 72 gives a quick estimate: 72 divided by the interest rate.
Is an HDFC Bank FD safe?
Deposits at HDFC Bank are covered by DICGC insurance up to ₹5 lakh per depositor, principal and interest combined. Amounts above that are not insured, so larger sums are often split across banks.
Is HDFC Bank FD interest taxable?
Yes. Interest is taxed at your slab rate. HDFC Bank deducts TDS at 10% once interest crosses ₹50,000 in a financial year, or ₹1,00,000 for senior citizens. Senior citizens under the old regime can claim the 80TTB deduction on up to ₹50,000 of interest a year.
