The method

How to calculate Post Office FD interest

Post Office time deposits calculate interest quarterly and pay it out once a year. Pick a tenure in the Post Office FD calculator and it applies that tenure's rate, then shows the maturity amount, total interest and what you keep after tax and inflation.

Maturity = P × (1 + r/4)^(4 × t) Yearly interest payout ≈ P × ((1 + r/4)^4 − 1)

The essentials

Post Office FD returns: yearly interest, tax and how rates compare

Yearly interest on a Post Office time deposit

On the 5-year Post Office time deposit at 7.50%, yearly interest works out to about ₹7,714 on ₹1 lakh, ₹38,568 on ₹5 lakh and ₹77,136 on ₹10 lakh, before tax. Because the Post Office pays interest out every year, these yearly amounts are what you actually receive; the calculator's maturity figure assumes the interest is left to compound.

Post Office FD for senior citizens and tax

Post Office time deposits pay the same rate to everyone, with no senior citizen premium. The 5-year time deposit qualifies for the Section 80C deduction under the old tax regime, and the interest is taxable at your slab rate. ₹10 lakh for 5 years at 7.50% grows to about ₹14.50 lakh if interest is left to compound. Senior citizens who want a regular income often compare this with the Senior Citizens Savings Scheme.

How do I calculate interest on a Post Office FD?
