FD calculator with post-tax returns

This FD calculator shows your fixed deposit maturity amount, total interest and what you keep after tax and inflation. It includes published FD interest rates for 14 banks and the Post Office, senior citizen rates, and five modes, from cumulative growth to FD ladders.

What your FD actually earns

Five calculation modes on one engine — cumulative growth, monthly payout, goal sizing, laddering and loan-against-FD. Every mode shows the post-tax and inflation-adjusted figure beside the headline number, because the headline rate is rarely the one you keep.

Inputs

Adds a 0.50% rate bump. The Section 80TTB deduction on interest applies only under the old tax regime.

Disclaimer: This calculator is an educational tool. Figures are projections based on the inputs supplied and the stated assumptions, not a guarantee of returns. Tax is modelled on total interest at the selected marginal slab; in practice TDS is deducted annually and final liability is settled on filing. Senior-citizen rate bumps vary by bank. The method

How the FD interest calculator works

Interest on a cumulative FD compounds at the bank's frequency, usually quarterly. Tax is applied to the interest at your slab rate, and the calculator then shows the post-tax and inflation-adjusted yields.

A = P × (1 + r/n)^(n × t) Tax = (A − P − 80TTB deduction) × slab rate Real yield = (1 + post-tax yield) / (1 + inflation) − 1

The Section 80TTB deduction (up to ₹50,000 of interest a year) applies only to senior citizens under the old tax regime. It is not available under the new regime.

Worked example: senior citizen, 30% slab

Deposit
₹10,00,000
Rate (including senior bump)
7.50%, compounded quarterly
Period
5 years
Maturity amount
₹14,49,948
Tax, new regime
₹1,34,984
Tax, old regime with 80TTB
₹59,984
Post-tax maturity, new regime
₹13,14,964

The ₹75,000 difference comes from the 80TTB deduction, which only the old regime allows.

The essentials

FD interest, tax and TDS explained

What is an FD?

A fixed deposit (FD) locks a sum with a bank or the Post Office for a fixed tenure at a fixed interest rate. In a cumulative FD the interest compounds and is paid at maturity. In a non-cumulative FD it is paid out monthly, quarterly or yearly instead, which is why the monthly income mode shows a lower total than the cumulative mode.

Tax on FD interest and TDS

FD interest is added to your income and taxed at your slab rate. Banks deduct TDS at 10% (20% without PAN) once your interest from that bank crosses ₹50,000 in a financial year, or ₹1,00,000 for senior citizens. TDS is an advance tax, not the final tax, so your actual liability is settled when you file. Senior citizens under the old regime can claim the 80TTB deduction on up to ₹50,000 of interest a year.

Post Office FD and FD ladders

The calculator also works as a Post Office FD calculator: Post Office time deposits compound quarterly, pay interest yearly and carry no senior citizen premium. Bank-specific rates are on the SBI FD calculator. The FD ladder mode splits a sum across deposits that mature in successive years, so part of the money becomes available every year. To compare an FD with market-linked income, see the SWP calculator; to size cash for emergencies, see the emergency fund calculator.

Common questions

FD Calculator: frequently asked questions

Still have questions? Contact us
How is FD interest calculated?
For a cumulative FD, A = P × (1 + r/n)^(n × t), where n is the compounding frequency. Most banks compound quarterly, so n = 4. Non-cumulative FDs pay simple interest out at each interval instead.
Is FD interest taxable?
Yes. FD interest is added to your income and taxed at your slab rate, whether it is paid out or reinvested. The calculator shows the maturity amount both before and after tax.
When does the bank deduct TDS on FD interest?
When interest from the bank in a financial year crosses ₹50,000, or ₹1,00,000 for senior citizens. TDS is 10% with PAN and 20% without it.
Does Section 80TTB apply under the new tax regime?
No. The 80TTB deduction of up to ₹50,000 a year on interest is available only to senior citizens who choose the old regime. The calculator applies it only in that case.
How much of my FD is insured?
DICGC insures up to ₹5,00,000 per depositor per bank, covering principal and interest together.
