The method

How to calculate SBI FD interest

SBI compounds interest on its cumulative fixed deposits quarterly. Pick a tenure bucket and the SBI fixed deposit calculator applies that bucket's rate, then shows the maturity amount, total interest and what you keep after tax.

Maturity = P × (1 + r/4)^(4 × t) Monthly interest (payout FD) ≈ P × r / 12

  • ₹1,00,000 for 1 year at 6.25% matures at about ₹1,06,398.
  • ₹50,000 in a 5-year SBI fixed deposit at 6.05% grows to about ₹67,509.
  • ₹5,00,000 for 5 years at 6.05% grows to about ₹6,75,088.

The essentials

SBI FD returns: monthly interest, senior citizen rates and doubling time

Monthly interest on an SBI FD

With a monthly payout (non-cumulative) SBI FD at 6.30%, interest is about ₹525 a month on ₹1 lakh, ₹2,625 a month on ₹5 lakh and ₹5,250 a month on ₹10 lakh, before tax. Switch the calculator to Monthly income mode to see the post-tax figure for your amount. Payout deposits earn less in total than a cumulative deposit, because the interest is paid out instead of compounding.

SBI FD for senior citizens

Senior citizens get a higher SBI FD rate, generally 0.50% above the general rate and 1.00% on 5–10 year deposits under SBI WeCare. Tick "Senior citizen" in the calculator to apply it. For example, ₹10 lakh for 5 years at 7.05% grows to about ₹14.18 lakh. Senior citizens under the old tax regime can also claim the 80TTB deduction on up to ₹50,000 of interest a year.

How many years does an FD take to double in SBI?

At 6.30% compounded quarterly, an SBI FD doubles in about 11.1 years. A quick estimate is the rule of 72: divide 72 by the rate, which gives about 11.4 years. At the 7.05% senior citizen rate, it takes roughly 10 years. For deposits across several banks, use the main FD calculator, which compares 14 banks and the Post Office.

Common questions

SBI FD Calculator: frequently asked questions

Still have questions? Contact us
How do I calculate interest on an SBI FD?
For a cumulative SBI FD, maturity = P × (1 + r/4)^(4 × t), because SBI compounds quarterly. Interest is the maturity amount minus the deposit. This SBI FD calculator applies the formula with SBI's rate for your tenure.
How much interest will I get on ₹1 lakh per month in SBI?
On a monthly payout SBI FD at 6.30%, ₹1 lakh earns about ₹525 a month before tax. On ₹5 lakh it is about ₹2,625 and on ₹10 lakh about ₹5,250. The exact figure depends on the tenure bucket you choose.
What is the SBI FD interest rate for senior citizens?
SBI generally pays senior citizens 0.50% above the general rate, and 1.00% above it on 5–10 year deposits under SBI WeCare. The rates loaded in this calculator are shown in the rate chart above; confirm the current rate with SBI.
In how many years will an SBI FD double?
At 6.30% compounded quarterly, about 11.1 years. The rule of 72 gives a quick estimate: 72 divided by the interest rate.
What is the difference between SBI STDR and TDR?
An STDR (special term deposit) reinvests the interest, so it compounds and is paid at maturity, which matches the calculator's Cumulative mode. A TDR (term deposit) pays the interest out at regular intervals, which matches Monthly income mode.
Is SBI FD interest taxable?
Yes. The interest is taxed at your slab rate. SBI deducts TDS at 10% once your interest crosses ₹50,000 in a financial year, or ₹1,00,000 for senior citizens. An SBI tax saver FD (a 5-year fixed deposit scheme) qualifies for the Section 80C deduction under the old regime but cannot be withdrawn early; use Cumulative mode with a 5-year tenure as a tax saver FD calculator.
Can I take a loan against an SBI FD instead of breaking it?
Banks, including SBI, offer loans against fixed deposits. Use the calculator's Loan against FD mode to compare the cost of borrowing with the interest you would give up by breaking the deposit early. SBI's premature withdrawal penalty is 0.50% on deposits up to ₹5 lakh and 1.00% above that, so enter the reduced rate in the calculator for an accurate comparison.
What is the penalty for breaking an SBI FD early?
State Bank of India's rule: 0.50% below the applicable rate on deposits up to ₹5 lakh; 1.00% on deposits above ₹5 lakh (rules in force since 1 April 2017). For example, ₹5 lakh booked for 3 years at 6.30% and closed after 18 months earns about ₹44,705 at 5.75%, which is ₹4,040 less than without the penalty. Before breaking a deposit, compare the cost with a loan against the FD using the calculator's Loan against FD mode.
