The method

How to calculate PNB FD interest

Punjab National Bank compounds interest on cumulative fixed deposits quarterly. Pick a tenure in the PNB FD calculator and it applies that tenure's rate, then shows the maturity amount, total interest and what you keep after tax and inflation.

Maturity = P × (1 + r/4)^(4 × t) Monthly interest (payout FD) ≈ P × r / 12

The essentials

PNB FD returns: monthly interest, senior citizen rates and comparison

Monthly interest on a PNB FD

With a monthly payout PNB FD at the 1-year rate of 6.25%, interest is about ₹521 a month on ₹1 lakh, ₹2,604 on ₹5 lakh and ₹5,208 on ₹10 lakh, before tax. Banks usually pay monthly interest at a slightly discounted rate, so treat these as close estimates. Switch the calculator to Monthly income mode to see the post-tax figure. Payout deposits earn less in total than cumulative ones, because the interest is paid out instead of compounding.

PNB FD for senior citizens

0.50% above the general rate up to 5 years; 0.80% above for longer deposits (ages 60 to under 80). Tick "Senior citizen" in the calculator and it loads the senior rate for the tenure you pick. For example, ₹10 lakh for 5 years at 6.85% grows to about ₹14.04 lakh. Senior citizens under the old tax regime can also claim the 80TTB deduction on up to ₹50,000 of interest a year, and can submit Form 15H to avoid TDS if their total income is below the taxable limit.

Common questions

PNB FD Calculator: frequently asked questions

Still have questions? Contact us
How do I calculate interest on a PNB FD?
For a cumulative deposit, maturity = P × (1 + r/4)^(4 × t), because interest compounds quarterly. Interest is the maturity amount minus the deposit. This PNB FD calculator applies the formula with Punjab National Bank's rate for your tenure.
What are the current PNB FD interest rates?
On Punjab National Bank's rate card effective 1 June 2026, the general rate is 6.25% for 1 year, 6.30% for 3 years and 6.35% for 5 years. The full chart, including senior citizen rates, is on this page. Confirm the current rate before you invest.
What is the penalty for breaking a PNB FD early?
Punjab National Bank's rule: 1.00%, on all tenors: you get the lower of the contracted rate or the rate for the period actually run, minus 1%. For example, ₹5 lakh booked for 3 years at 6.30% and closed after 18 months earns about ₹41,090 at 5.30%, which is ₹8,060 less than without the penalty. Before breaking a deposit, compare the cost with a loan against the FD using the calculator's Loan against FD mode.
How much monthly interest will I get on ₹1 lakh in PNB?
On a monthly payout FD at 6.25%, about ₹521 a month on ₹1 lakh before tax; about ₹2,604 on ₹5 lakh and ₹5,208 on ₹10 lakh.
In how many years will a PNB FD double?
At the 5-year rate of 6.35% compounded quarterly, about 11.0 years. The rule of 72 gives a quick estimate: 72 divided by the interest rate.
Is a PNB FD safe?
Deposits at Punjab National Bank are covered by DICGC insurance up to ₹5 lakh per depositor, principal and interest combined. Amounts above that are not insured, so larger sums are often split across banks.
Is PNB FD interest taxable?
Yes. Interest is taxed at your slab rate. Punjab National Bank deducts TDS at 10% once interest crosses ₹50,000 in a financial year, or ₹1,00,000 for senior citizens. Senior citizens under the old regime can claim the 80TTB deduction on up to ₹50,000 of interest a year.
